Combining Light Centralization Stroke Below

᪹ marks the preceding vowel as lightly centralized: its pronunciation shifts a little toward the middle of the vowel range. It belongs to Teuthonista, a specialist system for transcribing spoken dialects. Put it after the vowel; on its own, it has nothing to modify. A font may place it oddly.

What ᪹ means

It marks the preceding vowel as lightly centralized.

That means the vowel's pronunciation shifts a little toward the middle of the vowel range; the mark does not replace the vowel. Teuthonista is a system for transcribing spoken dialects, especially Germanic and Romance varieties, two broad European language families.

Teuthonista belongs to a longer tradition of phonetic notation, writing speech sounds with consistent signs: Lepsius’s General Linguistic Alphabet (1855), Ascoli’s Romance-language system (1873), Lenz’s dialect notation by 1900, and Teuchert’s Teuthonista presentation in 1924–1925.

How does Teuthonista mark vowel details?

Marks below vowel letters usually show vowel quality; marks above show quantity.

᪹ is the light centralization mark; ᪺ is the stronger member of the pair. The Teuthonista proposal illustrates them with a, e, i, o, ö, u, and ü.

Regional Teuthonista systems can assign shared signs different precise values. Follow the key for the atlas, dictionary, or collection you are reading; “lightly centralized” is the safe gloss, not one universal phonetic target.

How do I type ᪹ after a vowel?

Enter the vowel first, then ᪹.

Write it directly after the vowel it modifies, as in a᪹ or e᪹. In a sample such as ◌᪹, the dotted circle marks the attachment point; it is a placeholder, not an extra letter.

In a 2018 Noto issue, the centralization strokes appeared centered below the vowel instead of attached at the bottom left shown in Teuthonista examples. If placement looks wrong, compare another font before changing the character.

Specialist phonetic notation for recording dialect speech; separated from a vowel, it can look like a stray accent.

It modifies the preceding vowel; on its own, the mark has nothing to centralize.

Why does ᪹ look misplaced in a font?

It may be a font-positioning issue. A 2018 Noto report described this stroke centered below the vowel rather than attached at the lower left; compare another font before assuming the character is wrong.
