What ꇚ means
It represents one Yi syllable; context supplies its word meaning.
In standard Liangshan Yi writing, git is the romanized label for this syllable; its final t marks a high tone, or high pitch. It is a reading label, not an English word or software name.
The earliest surviving dated Yi-script inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485. That dates the inscription, not the beginning of Yi writing. Traditional Yi manuscripts carried religious, ritual, medical, magical, and genealogical knowledge through local lineages of bimo, Yi ritual specialists. A standardized Liangshan Yi script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It supported public writing in official documents, newspapers, and literature, as well as the preservation of ritual and epic texts.
Why do Yi scripts vary by region?
Local Yi traditions and the standardized Liangshan script are distinct.
Older Yi traditions vary in glyph shapes, the signs used, and writing direction. Traditional Yi ideographic writing—signs that convey meaning—is distinct from the Chinese-character tradition. The standardized Liangshan syllabary instead draws on older Northern Yi forms. This links ꇚ to a broader Yi writing tradition without making the modern standard interchangeable with local forms.
Standardization changed the script's role: local manuscripts preserved ritual knowledge and lineage, while the Liangshan standard supports public writing and preservation in Northern Yi communities. It is not a universal writing system for every Yi language.
This is a written syllable; its social tone comes from the Yi text and setting around it.
Without shared Yi-language context, a recipient may not know how to read it.

No. git is the romanized Yi reading label; its final t marks high tone in standard Liangshan Yi.
Why does ꇚ show as a box?
It can. A font without Yi coverage may show a missing-glyph box; use a font that includes Yi characters. The display issue does not change the character.
